Rose’s Kindy “Birthday”

Most kids at the Westport Kindergarten, aka “Kindy,” graduate to one of the local elementary schools when they turn 5.  The tradition is that they have a birthday celebration to commemorate this milestone and to say good-bye to their peers as they move schools.  Rose won’t turn 5 until September which means she would miss her Kindy birthday party.  But, of course, she was having none of it.  So, she persuaded her teachers to host a party in her honor before our departure from Westport.  This momentous event happened this past Monday.

Rose donned the traditional “colorful” cape and a custom-made tiara   as she assumed the seat of honor.

There she was given the power to decide the order of events, which included singing Happy Birthday in Maori, reminiscing, reviewing her Kindy Memory Book, dancing and, of course, a treat for all.

She even received a diploma.

I can’t tell you what song she picked for the dance party, but here’s her reciting one of the catchiest bits of the track:

And any celebration day wouldn’t be complete without a wee dip in the newly installed Kindy mud pit.

Kindy has been such a special place for Rose this year and we are grateful for the experiences she has enjoyed during our time in Westport.

  1. What happy times you have enjoyed. Returning to Cambridge may be difficult after all the great experiences you have had!

  2. Love the Birthday/graduation ceremony!! So cute! Wow, that tiara is quite large, too! Nice design!
Glad you will be back in the States soon, but have had a great experience in NZ.!
    Love, Walt and Diane

  3. What a wonderful event, and the (naughty?) song. I’d like a mud pie myself right about now. It’s been uplifting getting the reports of your escapades. Why stop when you get back to Cambridge? (Just being selfish….)
